Katie
took the Grind Café Writers’ Group “Free-write Challenge” at this year’s Summer
Dreams Literary Arts Festival at Trout Lake, Vancouver. The brave drew random
prompts then took a break from the fest to go sit under a tree, and let it rip
for 10 minutes without stopping in a free-write—and see what emerged. Braver
yet, they agreed to let us post their raw version. So remember, this is
unedited, unfinished output. Thanks to all participants.

I
would determine to spend more time outside in nature. I feel like I’ve spent
too much time indoors this summer, what with my move and job interview
preparation and ‘write one 20-minute free-write (try to every day) ever since I
took a course called “Write, Write, Write” two years ago. I would resolve to
spend more time with friends. Tamara lives one floor below. Trout Lake is so
beautiful (I’ve never been here before). My old boyfriend lives on Commercial
Drive near here. I don’t know why I feel so peaceful on this bench. I hope I
get accepted into my MFA at UBC. Why do I want more friends? – because friends
make me happier.
